Born in Los Angeles, Zach studied design at Texas State and has lived in Austin, New York, San Antonio, and now Houston. Over 20+ years as a graphic designer — specializing in branding, packaging, and environmental design — have shaped his sense of composition, balance, and visual storytelling.
His art practice, Crooked Halo, is a more personal and intuitive exploration. Influenced by abstract art, primitive and folk traditions, and modern expressionism, he seeks beauty in the overlooked and the everyday. Through layered mark making, texture, and color, he balances instinct with structure — allowing each piece to evolve organically.
While painting is his primary medium, he also explores collage to build depth and combine materials. Music and nature remain constant sources of inspiration, informing the rhythm, energy, and tone of his work.
At its core, his work is an exploration of connection — between control and spontaneity, intention and accident — seeking something that feels both grounded and alive.
